Associates in every Life Care skilled nursing and rehab center, as well as its corporate offices and affiliated Century Park retirement, independent living and assisted living communities, are encouraged to develop and track healthy habits. Each month, associates can turn in the number of steps they have walked during the month for a chance to win a monthly or annual prize. Other activities, like swimming, skiing and gardening, can be converted into steps as well.
Three winners are chosen by a blind drawing.
Julie Soriano, a licensed practical nurse and unit care coordinator at Life Care Center of Puyallup, Washington, was the grand-prize winner for 2016, winning $2,500 and three vacation days.
“It was surreal,” said Soriano. “I don’t win anything.”
The contest was about more than the money, thought. It was also about health.
“It’s a great way to hold myself accountable,” said Soriano.
Soriano is planning to use some of the award money to buy a new road bike so she can keep up her healthy exercise habits. Trails in her area provide a nice environment for the ride.
“It’s a nice way to get away from it all, not have to worry about my phone or anything,” Soriano said.
Mayfair Village’s own Janet Dailey came in second place, winning $750 and two vacation days.
“I was so excited I couldn’t even believe it,” Dailey said.
She also has special plans for the award money.
“I have two boys getting married, and it will come in real handy,” Dailey said.
Third place went to Katherine Scott, a speech therapist at Life Care Center of Copper Basin in Ducktown, Tennessee. She won $500 and one vacation day.
“It was incredibly encouraging,” Scott said about winning.
Scott plans to use the funds to support the Alzheimer’s Association, a cause dear to her heart since she lost her grandfather to Alzheimer’s disease in 2001. She is the captain of the facility’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s team.

The 2017 wellness contest is underway, with associates vying for prizes of $3,000 and three vacation days, $2,000 and two vacation days and $1,000 and one vacation day.
